Old Hill Station
Exit out of the Station and turn right to pick up the canal. Turn left onto the canal, heading north. This is still the Monarch's Way. No more directions for 1.5 miles, just keep the canal on your right and review the many information signs along the way.
Eventually, you will reach the canal equivalent of a T Junction at Cobb's Engine House. If you want refreshment, turn left for Bumble Hole Visitor Centre. The walk turns right and takes the first bridge (Toll End Workings) to cross the canal. Turn right towards Netherton Tunnel. We leave the canal immediately, looking for a path on the left hand side just after Cobb's Engine Bridge. Walk uphill, turning left at the top of the hill towards an information board. At the end of this path, turn right at the bollards and make your way uphill past a blue shelter overlooking the football pitches.
Dixon's Green and Dudley Town Centre
It was always coming, some urban road walking. We need to get through the estate to turn left at New Rowley Road, heading uphill and west towards Dudley Town Centre. Believe me, you will know when you have arrived.
At Dudley, you will see the Castle dominating the town from its lofty hillside position. Turn right and work your way through the biggest bus terminus that I have ever seen by taking in Ingham Street and turning right on the busy Castle Hill Road. Look for a path between a disused cinema and the Thai Boxing Centre which takes you across a busy car park and onto waste ground. The public footpath skirts the walls of Dudley Castle and Zoo and you are guaranteed some interesting sounds from within. The path is well defined and quite wild but by bearing right at a fork, you will pass a factory on your left and be delivered to New Birmingham Road.
The Home Stretch
You will pass the canal tours of the Black Country Museum but despite a look, we couldn't work a route along the canal towpath. Instead cross the canal on Birmingham New Bridge on the road and look for the steps down on the right hand side. Go under the bridge but the walking along the canal towpath is short lived as we have to come back up at the next Bridge, Dudley Road Bridge. Cross this bridge and head north on the Dudley road, turning right into the High Street. This turns into Owen Road at the roundabout and you can see the Tipton Slasher Statue in the park on the right. Tipton Station is at the top of Owen Road.
